Black & Brown Youth Summit - April 2009

The Black and Brown Summit will always have a special place in my heart. I remember that day and can't help but be glad because I know change is coming. On April 4th, 2009 a group of boys at ages seven to eighteen spoke without fear about the racism, the violence, and the hate they've witnessed in their communities. We learned that united we can change lives and impact futures. I promise to keep things moving forward by writing to Hilda L. Solis, U.S. Secretary of Labor. She is currently ninth in line for the presidency but more importantly she's in a position on Obama's cabinet where she can improve the lives of millions of Americans who are in search of jobs. Hilda Solis is an alumna of my high school, La Puente High school. Growing up in the same low income gang infested community, I believe I'm in the greatest position to help her change lives and impact futures!

Sincerely,

The performing arts studio in the San Gabriel Valley Dance Academy is directed by the mother & daughter team of Carol and Rayven Armijo. Ballet Folklorico De Carolina... The belief that the preservation of Mexican and Spanish cultures is important is the basis for the teaching of this folklorico. By promoting cultural awareness through the practice and presentation of the beautiful art of both Mexican and Spanish folk dancing, instructors teach the students of Ballet Folklorico de Carolina to take pride in their heritage and culture. They are taught a wide array of dances from the many regions of Mexico as well as classical Spanish and Flamenco dances using castanet. Dancing, singing or playing an instrument teaches everyone that hard work and discipline create successful individuals. Especially in our youth, this can also create a strong sense of accomplishment and pride - Carol Armijo Folklorico Spanish ~ Flamenco Tap ~ Ballet ~ Jazz ~ Hip Hop Tiny Tots Hawaiian / Polynesian Salsa ~ Cumbias ~ Cha Cha ~ Merengue Ballroom ~ Social Dancing Let Us Entertain You!
